My insurance will not cover Vayacog®. What should I do?
Unfortunately, many insurance plans have yet to understand and acknowledge medical foods. Applying for coverage may at least signal to insurance companies that there is a need and savings to them in many cases. We are also working to try to get more insurance providers to cover Vayacog®.
How soon should I notice a change?
It may take 30-90 days to really see the impact though some see positive changes after 14 days. Because, unlike drugs, Vayacog® works by managing a complex lipid imbalance in the brain, so the results will be seen over time.
How is Vayacog different from supplements, such as soy derived phosphatidylserine (PS) and fish oil?
Soy derived PS, does not contain the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Fish oils are in forms of triglyceride (TG) containing the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA but not PS. The active ingredient in Vayacog® is PS-Omega-3 (Lipirinen®), which contain both PS and omega-3 fatty acids in one molecule. The differences between this composition and other omega-3s, and PS products were investigated in a preclinical study (animal model) and was later repeated by different groups with similar outcomes. The results showed that PS-Omega-3 increases the bioavailability of omega-3 fatty acids to brain tissues. The composition resulted in 42% DHA elevation in the brains of rats as compared to control, whereas feeding with fish oil (omega-3 supplement) or fish-oil + soy PS mixture, resulted in lowered increase in DHA levels (~14%). These results suggest that PS-omega-3 has superior effects over each one of its components or their mixture.
Where is the phosphatidylserine (PS) in Vayacog® from? Is it GMO? Does it contain bovine cortex?
The phosphatidylserine (PS) is marine derived, specifically from krill, a shellfish. That means it does not contain any bovine products and is not genetically modified in any way.
I have trouble swallowing pills. What should I do?
It is not an uncommon situation to struggle with swallowing capsules. This is why we use capsules that can be opened and sprinkled on food. Anything that will mask the slight odor and taste would do (like peanut butter, apple sauce, orange juice). The molecule is a lipid (fat) hence does not dissolve in water, but orange juice hides it fairly well.
I started taking Vayacog® and was already taking an omega-3 supplement daily. Is it okay to continue taking the omega-3 supplement while taking Vayacog®?
Vayacog® is specially formulated to provide higher bioavailability than supplements, to help restore the brain’s lipid balance. Whether to continue with an omega-3 supplement while on Vayacog is a decision that should be discussed with your health care provider.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
The recommended daily dose is 1 capsule daily. We recommend taking Vayacog® when it's the most convenient time that can be incorporated into your daily routine. This can help you remember. Should you miss a dose, take Vayacog once you remember and continue dosing normally.
Are there any clinical trials on going?
Yes, we are currently recruiting for a Mild Cognitive Impairment Study. Please click here for more information.
What is a medical food?
Unlike dietary supplements that are intended to enhance wellness in healthy populations, medical foods are formulated specifically to manage nutritional deficiencies that are associated with certain diseases and health conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and early memory impairment (EMI). Medical foods are made of ingredients that receive the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) designation; and they are required to be based on scientific evidence to confirm the safety and efficacy of the product.

What is the difference between “FDA approved” and “FDA regulated”?
New drugs must be proven safe and effective to FDA's satisfaction before companies can market them. During the approval process, FDA experts review the results of laboratory, animal and human clinical testing done by manufacturers. If FDA grants an approval, it means the agency has determined that the benefits of the product outweigh the risks for the intended use. VAYA's product are regulated as medical foods and not pharmaceuticals; therefore they do not go through this regulatory pathway. The medical food category is tightly regulated by FDA. In order to be considered by FDA as a medical food, the products must meet several requirements that are set by FDA. These requirements relate to the quality and safety of the products [i.e.: the product should be produced under current Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP); the product must contain ingredients that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS); the product development must be based on recognized scientific principles].

What is “PS” in the “PS-Omega-3” of Vayacog®?
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid that is already found in the brain as an important part of the cell structure. It is negatively charged and resides on the inside of the cell membrane, giving it a key role in the maintenance of cellular function and communication. PS is also most abundantly found in the brain, indicating its importance to the brain’s function. There are more than a dozen studies published on the safety and efficacy of PS-Omega-3, VAYA Pharma’s keystone lipid. PS-Omega-3 contained in Vayacog® plays a double-role: • It plays a role in the maintenance of cellular function and communication • It works as a delivery-platform for Omega-3 to the brain VAYA Pharma’s proprietary structure allows Vayacog® to target the brain, delivering essential lipid to address the lipid deficiency associated with Early Memory Impairment.
What are the sources of Vayacog®?
Vayacog® is made from generally recognized as safe (GRAS) ingredients. Vayacog® is derived from soy and oily fish including herring, sprat and anchovy from different locations (West coast of Norway, Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the U.S., Peru or Chile).
Is the harvesting of fish to source the material for your products sustainable?
VAYA Pharma supports sustainable management of krill and fish populations and an eco-friendly supply chain to maintain the conservation of marine life sources.
Why does it take 30-90 days for Vayacog® to start working in the body?
Because Vayacog® is in its own way compensating for and managing a nutritional deficiency in the brain, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, it takes time to accumulate in the system. It takes an average of 30-90 days for Vayacog® to build up in the body in order to see the full effect on Early Memory Impairment.
Are there any side effects from Vayacog®?
There are virtually no side effects (adverse events) reported from those taking Vayacog®. Vayacog® is clinically shown to be safe and well tolerated. The most common side effect reported is gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort. • Vayacog Clinical study describing safety: Vakhapova, et al. (2011) Safety of phosphatidylserine containing omega-3 fatty acids in non-demented elderly: a double-blind placebo-controlled trial followed by an open-label extension BMC Neurol.11:79
Do I have to take Vayacog® forever?
The distinct lipid deficiencies associated with Early Memory Impairment addressed by Vayacog® cannot be corrected by the modification of diet alone. Only your health care provider can evaluate your condition and make specific recommendations regarding your health.
Where should I store Vayacog®?
High temperatures can impact the efficacy of Vayacog®. We recommend you store the product at a temperature lower than 77° F (25° C) and protect it from light and moisture.
What if I missed a dose of Vayacog®?
The recommended daily dose for Vayacog® is one (1) capsules daily. As a medical food, Vayacog® addresses nutritional deficiencies associated with Early Memory Impairment, so if a dose has been skipped or missed, simply take it when you remember and continue as usual. If you have additional questions about dosage, we recommend you speak with your health care provider.
Are there other ways to take Vayacog if I can’t swallow pills?
Vayacog capsules can be opened and sprinkled on food or mixed with a beverage. The foods and beverages that work best are salads, applesauce, yogurt, jelly and hazelnut spread. For the best taste, be sure to mix it into a cold food or beverage.
What is the difference between the Vayacog® composition and regular fish oil?
The Vayacog® composition, specially formulated to address lipid deficiency and imbalances associated with early memory impairment (EMI), consists of Phosphatidylserine-Omega-3 (PS-Omega-3-DHA dominant). It is this unique structure that allows the composition to target the brain, delivering essential nutrients to address the specific lipid deficiency associated with Early Memory Impairment. In a preclinical study (later repeated by different groups with similar outcomes), results showed that PS-Omega-3 increases the bioavailability of Omega-3 fatty acids to brain tissues. In fact, there was a 42% increase in Omega-3 elevation in the brains of rats compared to control, whereas a fish oil plus PS mixture (not bond/attached), did not result in a significant increase as compared to the control.
Why can’t I just buy PS and Omega-3 separately and then take them together?
The differences between Vayacog® and a mixture of supplements, such as PS and Omega-3, were thoroughly investigated in a preclinical study. This study showed that the specially formulated composition of PS-Omega-3 found in Vayacog® significantly increased the bioavailability of Omega-3 fatty acids in brain tissues versus the control (or placebo). In fact, there was a 42% increase in Omega-3 elevation in the brains of rats compared to control, whereas a fish oil plus PS mixture (not bond/attached), did not result in a significant increase as compared to the control. The difference is in the structure of the lipids found in Vayacog®, and its ability to act as a direct delivery platform to the brain.
Why is the amount of Omega-3 in Vayacog® so low?
Vayacog’s unique composition of phosphatidylserine (PS) attached to Omega-3 fatty acids allows essential lipids to reach the brain. This targeted delivery requires significantly less Omega-3s in each capsule.
Can I take Vayacog® with the other medications that I am taking?
Vayacog® can be a safe and effective medical food to manage nutritional deficiencies and imbalances not addressed by other drug treatments. Vayacog® has no known contraindications however, Vayacog® could potentially interact with cholinergic or anticholinergic medications. Before starting/changing any management approach including Vayacog®, VAYA Pharma recommends you consult your health care professional. VAYA Pharma  directs all patients to use the products under medical supervision.
Is Vayacog® available Over the Counter (OTC) or is there any generic version that is comparable to Vayacog®?
Vayacog® is a unique composition containing Phosphatidylserine enriched with Omega-3 fatty acids (PS-Omega-3) and has no generic version in the market. Vayacog® ’s patented and clinically tested composition is available by prescription and cannot be found over the counter. Vayacog® ’s composition is indicated for the dietary management of certain lipid imbalances associated with Early Memory Impairment in adults. The difference is in the structure of the lipids found in Vayacog® , and its ability to act as a direct delivery platform to the brain.
